If you are simply going to be a Citrix Administrator and only want to manage an environment, I would say you could avoid this book. If you are the type of person who wants to know what’s going on in the background, you can probably get an idea from this book.

If you want to play around with a Xen environment and write code? This book can help a little. Keep in mind this book mainly discusses 32 bit systems. The main topic centers on writing a paravirtualized kernel. I would stress a programming background as it will make it easier to follow the authors presentation.

Access to the source and google can probably do the job as well. Will I keep this book? I am not sure who many times I will be referring to it however. Maybe this book is now a little bit outdated but still is great source of knowledge about Xen. I really enjoyed exercises: So only one minus that I found in this book is to much talk about 32 bit systems and to less about 64 bits, but it is because of edge of this book.

But definetly it is great knowledge source for developers. One person found this helpful. I’m a big fan of open source and virtualization, so I was probably predisposed to like this book, but it far exceeded guidr expectations. By the way, this is a good looking book – the images here don’t do it justice.

Whoever definitibe responsible for the cover deserves a nice bonus or promotion. But on to the meat: I learned a lot here, and not just about Xen.

Although it’s obvious thee me now, I never thought about the teaching opportunity presented by writing a paravirtualized kernel tue since you aren’t dealing with real hardware, a lot of the nastiness is taken away, leaving you free to concentrate on the more general OS issues.

As the foreword points out, this book could be used as a text in an OS kernel course. The author writes very well, and explains difficult concepts with grace and ease. This was very enjoyable to read, with for me just the right level of detail. Definitely recommended for anyone with an interest in kernel internals, and of course if you specifically need to know about Xen, this really is “The Definitive Guide”.

In the past VMWare dominated the market, we took its hypervisor as is and as granted but of course cost money.

The book actually opens our eyes to the inner working not only hypervisor, but also the x86 hardware and certain aspects of OS. Great for readers interested on system programming. Longing that the author can cover more on HVM topics as well on 2nd edition. This book is for anyone who wants to understand the inner workings of the Xen Hypervisor.

There are also examples where to look at the Xen source code and some porting hints for bringing Xen to other platforms. If you look for a book about Xen administration or management then it is definitely not for you.

I could hardly believe so many good reviews about this book. It seems to me those reviews are written by someone who has not ever used Xen. Not to mention to read its source code. I, as a researcher in virtualization working with Xen for nearly 5 years, believe this book is completely garbage. The author does not even try to make this book clear. I tried very hard in understanding this book but learnt nothing about Xen because of the horrible writing. If you want to learn Xen, just google the keyword.

Much useful than this garbage book. A Kid’s Review 5. Amazing book for anyone who wants to know about xen, in a very easy way. See all 8 reviews.
