But Greenwald argues that there is only one essential factor in determining competitive advantages: A necessary read for those interested in competitive analysis. The authors take the pain to explain each scenario in simple terms. It grewnwald on sustainable competitive advantages which are only two of five forces that Porter mentions. There are multiple chapters with detailed case studies, which are very relevant if you want to practice greemwald. In addition, I understand his position that a strong brand is not a competitive advantage – it must be coupled with barriers to entry, economies of scale or something else.

I also believe the general strategy he proposes in this book to be beneficial.

Dec 12, J rated it really liked it. Each chapter is divided into one part theory followed by one relevant case study. This is a great book if you have an interest in business strategy and how businesses actually survive in a demystifisd time period.

We all admire Michael Porter for his wisdom regarding strategy.

Im very unimpressed by the analytical framework presented, and wish the book would’ve sticked to more economically important ideas, and not try to predict the future and drag all opinions to absolute conclusions. Proprietary technology protected by patents is a strong advantage, but with a deadline. If it lacks a competitive advantage, the firm needs to ruthlessly focus on efficiency. But every manager will find Competition Demystified useful as well.

We were told that this book gives a simplified and much more clear view of what strategy is all about. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
